Neon and glow - how does it work?

Hi!
Im new to Luminar Neo (1.22.1) and Im trying to use the Neon and glow tool.
If using Neon and drawing with the pencil I get a neon effect following the drawn line, but if making a mask over an object, neither neon or glow does much. I see youtube clips where they make a mask of an object, and then push the neon amount lever high, which causes a neon "halo" around the object. For me nothing happens. Any ideas what I might do wrong?
Im on Windows 11, by the way.
 
Ok, so I realize that what I can't seem to achieve ist to make my own mask and then apply neon and glow. Luminar desides what is the main motif and apples there. Is it possible to define your own mask?
